Carig: Can you top the greatest starting lineup ever? (The Athletic)

CEDAR GROVE, NJ. — People ask me what I do in times of national emergency when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I get on Twitter and come up with baseball thought exercises to help pass the time during social distancing. At least, that was the root of what became a fun little pastime. Here’s the premise:

I figured this lineup might be pretty straightforward. Barry Bonds probably makes sense in left field. But I grew up in the East Bay, and there’s no way that Rickey Henderson isn’t making my team. Otherwise, was there that much to argue about? Well, it serves me right for underestimating baseball Twitter when it’s got some time on its hands. By Monday night, the replies to that original Tweet were approaching 2,400.

Respondents ranged from readers, fellow writers, family, and even some folks who played in the Major Leagues. Some went along with the spirit of the exercise. Other got literal, treating me to lectures about how an average player…
