The Baseball 100: No. 15, Josh Gibson (The Athletic)

Starting in December and ending on Opening Day, Joe Posnanski will count down the 100 greatest baseball players by publishing an essay on a player every day for 100 days. In all, this project will contain roughly as many words as “Moby Dick.” Yes, we know it’s nutty. We hope you enjoy.

Sometimes I play this game and imagine what it would be like if I was one of only a few people in America who got to see Mark McGwire hit baseballs from 1996 to 2000.

The question: How would I tell that story?

Forget the records. Nobody is keeping records. Forget the numbers. There are no numbers, at least no numbers anybody trusts. Forget the PED part. Nobody cares enough to even look. Forget everything. There is no video footage. There are no newspaper stories. There are only a handful of grainy posed photographs that show nothing at all except that someone named Mark McGwire once existed.

How would I tell that story?
