Somewhere in Gerrit Cole’s closet was a sign that he had never forgotten about the Yankees. Literally.
Cole unveiled the sign at his Yankees introductory press conference on Wednesday that he now famously brought to the 2001 World Series as an 11-year-old fan of the team.
“I would just like to say, I have been here, I have always been here,” Cole said to open the press conference while posing next to his wife Amy, agent Scott Boras and Yankees co-owner Hal Steinbrenner.
Cole, 29, said his dad brought him the sign when they had a celebratory dinner after agreeing to the nine-year, $324 million deal with the Yankees. It was a surprise for the Yankees. Cole told YES Network his parents kept the sign in a closet at their house.
“We didn’t know he had the sign,” Steinbrenner told YES Network. “That’s amazing he kept it all these years. It proves he says what he says he is: a lifelong Yankees fan.”
