Zack Wheeler using doubting Brodie Van Wagenen as Phillies motivation (New York Post)


PHILADELPHIA — Zack Wheeler already had 118 million reasons to succeed for the Phillies after bolting the Mets as a free agent.

Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen gave him one more.

The hard-throwing right-hander was introduced as a Phillie Monday at Citizens Bank Park along with former Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius, two strong additions to Joe Girardi’s new club as the Phillies take on a New York, NY flavor.

After the Phillies signed Wheeler to that five-year, $118 million contract, it was Van Wagenen who proclaimed the Phillies overpaid.

“I think the value for what we thought the investment was didn’t line up,” Van Wagenen said of Wheeler last Monday at the winter meetings. “The projections we had for Zack — both short-term and long-term — didn’t quite match up to the market he was able to enjoy.”

Wheeler heard those comments.

“I don’t need any more motivation. I already got it,’’ Wheeler told The Post away from the crush of media. “But that’s his opinion. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but yeah, that may help me out a little bit.’’
